Team Tennis is back!
Registration for our upcoming CTA Team Tennis season opens tomorrow at 6:00 PM, with play beginning Thursday, October 8 at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center.
This will also be our first CTA league run through Matchiv, our new league management platform!
WHEN WE’LL PLAY
Team Tennis Schedule - A reminder, team tennis will play Thursday 6:30pm to 9:30pm and Every other Saturday from Noon to 2:30pm. We do have the Saturdays we are not scheduled for as back ups in case there is rain.

HOW TEAM TENNIS WORKS
Unlike our traditional leagues, you’ll register individually and then be drafted onto a team.
We are planning for 8 teams, with 5 players per team — one player at each CTA level:
Open • A • B • C • D
One player on each team will also serve as the Team Captain.
Each team match consists of five lines of play, using a combination of singles and doubles, with at least 2 doubles or 2 singles, and the last match required to be doubles. Every active player must play at least one line and may play a maximum of two lines.
There are no level restrictions on doubles pairings, so captains will have plenty of flexibility when putting together their lineups.
SCORING
Team Tennis scoring is a little different from our regular leagues — every game matters!
Each line is played first to 5 games. If the score reaches 4–4, a first-to-5-point tiebreak determines the line.
But winning the most lines doesn’t necessarily win the team match.
Instead, we add up every game won across all five lines, and the team with the most total games wins the match.
There’s also an overtime element. If the team that wins the fifth and final line is still behind in the overall game total, the match continues into overtime.
If the teams reach a tie in total games, they’ll play a first-to-7 super tiebreak to determine the winner.
So even if your team gets off to a rough start, the match may be far from over!
SUBSTITUTES
Substitutes are allowed, but there is a competitive penalty for using one.
The opposing team receives a 1-game bonus for each substitute used, plus an additional game for each line that substitute plays.
For now, we will continue using the existing CTA Subs List to find substitutes.
Team Tennis results will not affect your CAPERS/Matchiv singles or doubles rating.
THE TEAM TENNIS DRAFT
We need 8 captains for the season!
If you’re interested in being a captain, you’ll be able to indicate that when you register.
The official Team Tennis Draft will be held Tuesday, October 6 at 6:30pm at Violet Bar & Lounge. Don't be late!
Captains will draft their teams that evening, with additional details about the draft coming soon.
REGISTRATION IS THROUGH MATCHIV
Registration opens tomorrow at 6:00 PM through Matchiv.
Registration Fee: $82.00
When you register, you are registering for the player pool — you will not select a team or playing level. There are 8 positions for each level. Captains can pre-select a co-captain by emailing their co-captain selection to president@capital-tennis.org. If a captain selects a co-captain, they will not pick a player during the first round of the draft. After the draft, your team assignment and roster will appear in Matchiv.
Level - When you sign up, you will be put into a level based on your current combined Singles and Doubles rating. If you want to play a higher level please let me know I can manually move you.
Matchiv will also be used throughout the season for:
- Schedules and team rosters
- Live scoring
- Team lineups
- Match information and results
- League communications
- Email notifications — and push notifications once the Matchiv mobile apps are available
Your current CTA ratings have already been transferred into Matchiv. If you haven’t activated your account yet, please do so at https://matchiv.com using your email address associated with you CTA account. Please email president@capital-tennis.org if you are having any sign up issues.
