Time and Place

All outdoor matches are scheduled to play at Rock Creek Tennis Center.  We will be kicking off tournament weekend with a few Friday night matches* and then continue with a full day of matches Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 8 pm.  Should rainy weather move us indoors, we will play in the Rock Creek bubble on Friday and at East Potomac Tennis Center (Hains Point) on Saturday and Sunday and the play schedule may be adjusted to later in the day.

*You will have the option to indicate your availability for Friday evening matches, but we will otherwise NOT be accepting any scheduling requests.  If you register, it is assumed you are available all day both Saturday and Sunday.

Tournament Format

There are five separate draws based on skill divisions: OPEN, A, B, C, and D, to be dictated by GLTA rating and CAPERS ratings (details are explained below under Rules for Registration).

There will be two phases of tournament match play: Round Robin Phase, in which players will be assigned to a group, with one seeded player in each group, and play at least three shortened-format matches; and Phase Two of tournament, where players with the most winning record from group matches will advance to single elimination play, either as quarterfinals (only if large draw), semifinals (most typical), or straight to a final (for small draw).

Match format during Round Robin Phase will be best-of-three-set matches, with no-ad scoring for all games, a standard first-to-7-points-by-2 tiebreak for 1st and 2nd sets, and a first-to-10 points-by-2 super tiebreak as the deciding third "set" if needed (in lieu of a normal third set).

Match format for Phase 2 single-elimination phase will be normal scoring, best-of-three-full-sets.

Match format modifications may be made at the discretion of the tournament directors due to weather or time related constraints.

Fast play during all matches will be encouraged and monitored. Seven-minute warm-ups (max), fast between points, brief change-overs, etc.  Please help us stay on schedule!

Rules for Registration

Both GLTA ratings and CTA CAPERS ratings are taken into account when selecting division of play.  Players cannot play below their GLTA or CAPERS rating.  If GLTA rating and CAPERS rating differ, the player must play the higher of the two.  If a player doesn't have a GLTA rating, then that player must follow the below guidelines using CTA CAPERS rating as of 5/9/2019.

- 4.5 and above must play OPEN

- 4.0 - 4.49 must play A or higher

- 3.5 - 3.99 must play B or higher

- 3.0 - 3.49 must play C or higher

- 2.99 and below D or higher

NOTE: Previous winner - if a player has won the division in the year prior (2018), that player must play up a division level.

Any questionable registrations shall be approached on case-by-case basis, as policy does allow for appeals to tournament directors to register in a draw that may not be consistent with current policy.  If you have any questions or unsure of your current rating, please do not hesitate to ask the tournament directors.

Determining Group Winners

Group winners advancing to elimination brackets will be determined in the following order:

1.     Most match wins.

2.     Head-to-head results, if (only) two players have the same number of group match wins.

3.     Sets won and lost, if more than two players have the same number of match wins or there is no head-to-head result between two players. Match tiebreakers count as sets.

4.     Games won and lost. Match tiebreakers count as one game.

5.     Sets won and lost among players involved in the tie.

6.     Games won and lost among players involved in the tie.

7.     Coin flip.

Note, some elimination brackets may need completion from best 2nd place finishes in group play (same ranking criteria, 1-7, will be applied).

Amenities

We will provide bottled water, Gatorade/Powerade, ice and snacks, peanut butter, bagels, granola bars, etc. On Saturday we will offer an assorted sandwiches and chips lunch between 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
