Time and Place

Matches will be held from 8am- 6pm on May 20-21, 2017, at the George Washington University Tennis Center at 2100 Foxhall Road, NW, Washington, DC 20007.

Tournament Format

The tournament will begin with round-robin group play in the three divisions, feeding into three elimination brackets to determine this year’s champions.  For round-robin phase, some teams will be seeded and all drawn into groups, with each team playing one match against each team in their group.   Teams with the most winning record in their group will advance to elimination brackets, either as quarterfinals (only if large draw), semifinals (more likely), or straight to a final (for small draw).  Seeds in each division will be determined by our tournament committee, with consideration of both GLTA ranking points and CTA CAPERS ratings. (Actual number of groups and seeds in each division will follow from tournament registration results).

Round robin phase matches will be best-of-three tiebreak sets with no-ad scoring and a first-to-10-points match tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. Group winners will advance to the elimination bracket, where matches will be full best-of-three tiebreak sets, normal scoring.

Timely play during all matches will be very important and will be monitored. Warm-ups will be no more than 7 minutes. No more than 20 seconds in between points. Changeovers will be no more than 90 seconds, two-minutes in between sets. No break after the first game of a set.

Tournament Ratings

There will be three separate draws – Open/A, B, and C/D divisions using the ratings as follows:

GLTA Rating: If both players have a GLTA rating, then each partner cannot play below the highest GLTA rating. If one player has a GLTA rating and the other does not, the GLTA rating will be used.

CAPERS Rating: If neither player has a GLTA rating, then Capers will be used as follows:

- Open/A Doubles will be combined and therefore no player can have a CAPERS rating lower than 4.0

- The doubles partner with a CAPERS rating of 3.5 - 3.99 must play B or higher and therefore both players will play B or higher

- C/D Doubles will be combined and therefore no player on can have a CAPERs rating of higher than 3.499

Participants will register for the tournament based on the ratings guidelines. Doubles teams will not be able to play down a division based on the lowest ranking of their partnership.

Determining Group Winners

Group winners shall be determined in three tiers of consideration, as necessary. Players in a group will first be ranked in order of match wins. Only in the event of a tie for first place in a group based on match record, the tied players will then be ranked in order of set win/loss record from all sets played over three matches (a super-tie-break third “set” played shall still be considered a set for these ranking purposes). In the event that there are still players tied for first place in a group after second-tier ranking, the tied players will then be ranked by win/loss for all games played during their three matches (any first-to-seven-tiebreak or super-tiebreak played to determine a set winner shall count as one game win or loss for these ranking purposes).

Registration

Registration is open starting Wednesday, May 3rd, and will close on Sunday, May 14th. Both players within a doubles team must register. Teams who won in their division for the 2016 Championships will need to play up to the next division in 2017.  Players who won a division in 2016 can remain in that division in 2017, if they play with a new partner and fall within the division guidelines.

Amenities

We will provide bottled water, ice and snacks, peanut butter, bagels, granola bars, etc. On Saturday we will offer an assorted sandwiches and chips lunch between 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
