Benefitting Charities
For the 2011 Capital Classic, we have chosen the Mautner Project, Team DC and Food & Friends as our designated sponsors.
Each of these unique organizations contributes to the gay, lesbian and transgendered community in a variety of ways.
Mautner Project
The Mautner Project is committed to improving the health of women who partner with women including lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals, through direct and support service, education and advocacy. The Mautner Project was founded in 1990 following the death of Mary-Helen Mautner in 1989 of breast cancer. Shortly before her death, Mary-Helen asked her partner, Susan Hester, to start an organization that could help other lesbians facing the overwhelming challenges of life-threatening illnesses. The Mautner Project envisions a health care system that is respectful of and accessible to all without regard for their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
Food and Friends
Food & Friends has served the Washington D.C. community for more than two decades providing caring for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries in conjunction with nutrition counseling. Reverend Carla Gorrell founded Food & Friends in 1988 when a friend, sick at home with AIDS, needed something to eat. What began as lunch for one has become 3 meals a day, for more than 1,450 individuals, six days a week. Food & Friends has moved from a cramped church basement to their own state-of-the-art kitchen and pantry facility and initiated new programs to meet the changing needs of people living with HIV/AIDS and other life-challenging illnesses in the Washington, DC , metropolitan community.
